CRP - the C-reactive protein is commonly present in the blood of healthy people only in very small amounts. The concentration of CRP quickly increases during bacterial infections, however during viral infections it's concentration stays low. Because of this behavior the measurement of CRP concentrations can be used together with clinical symptoms for the distinguishing between bacterial and viral infections. It can also be used for assessing the success of ongoing therapy.
